In April of 2000 the City of Wallis
Economic Development Corporation was established to preserve and enhance
economic development within the City of Wallis.
MISSION The mission
of the Corporation is:
* Existing business support and growth
* New business recruitment
* Job creation
* Tourism promotion
* Community enhancement
ADMINISTRATION The
Corporation is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors who are appointed
by City Council.
Up to four of the board seats maybe held by city council
members, with the remaining seats reserved for citizens of Wallis.
FUNDING Funding for
Corporate activities is provided by a dedication of one third of the City's
sales tax revenues.
MEETINGS The Board meets monthly
on the fourth Wednesday of the month at City Hall. Meetings open at 7:00
PM, and are open to the public. The Notice and Agenda of each meeting is
posted on the front door of City Hall at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.
INCENTIVES
Business Assistance Grants

Both new and existing businesses are eligible for cash match grants for
store-front improvements, signage, and property
improvements such as landscaping and lighting.
Tax Abatement
Expansion of existing businesses as well as new business relocation is
encouraged by a tax abatement policy designed to meet the needs of both small
and large companies. Value added as low as $50,000 is eligible for tax

Mayor
Tony I. Salazar

Mayor:
Tony I. Salazar, Jr.: Tony has served
on the Board since its creation in 2000. He holds the office of
Mayor, and therefore serves as one of the City Council's
representatives. He is employed in insurance sales with the
Knights of Columbus Insurance Company. In addition to serving as
Mayor and Board member, Tony is a member of the Autofest Steering
Committee, the Lion's Club, and the Knights of Columbus. His
church membership is Guardian Angel Catholic Church. He has three
children, and one granddaughter. His hobbies are golf and reading. |

Tom
York

Tom York: Tom has
served as a citizen Board member since 2004. He is the owner of a
local antique store, The Country Rose, and is involved in a number of
area organizations. Among them are the Chamber of Commerce,
Autofest Steering Committee, and Sons of American Legion. Tom is a
member of the Simonton Community Church. He has four children and
two grandchildren. His hobbies include community work, wood
carving, and gardening. |

Councilor John Alford

John Alford: John serves as a
City Council representative on the Board, and was appointed in 2005. He
is employed by Acme Brick Company as a Supervisor of Mining and
Grinding. John also serves on the Progress Cemetery Board of Directors,
and is a member of Evergreen Baptist Church. He has two children and
eight grandchildren. His hobby is farming and ranching. |

Councilor James King

James King: James
has served as a City Council representative on the Board since the
Board's creation in 2000. He is the owner of King Construction
Materials Co., Inc., a general contracting company. In addition to
his service on the Board, James is a member of the Sons of American
Legion, Knights of Columbus, Austin County Law Enforcement Alumni
Citizen's Association. He likewise stays involved in youth
activities such as the Boy Scouts, and coaches a Youth Shooting Team.
James is a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church. He has one
daughter. His hobbies are firearms and shooting teams. |

Johnson

Dona Johnson:
Dona has served on the Board as a citizen representative since the
Board's creation in 2000, and is retired. She also serves as Vice
President of the Knox Memorial Library Advisory Board. Dona is a
member of the Isaiah Community Church, and serves there as a Sunday
School Teacher. She has eight children, eleven grandchildren, and
four great grandchildren. Her hobbies are reading and solving "Word
Find" puzzles. |

Wix

Mary Wix:
Mary was appointed to the Board as a citizen representative in October,
2007. She and her husband, Larry, are both retired, and are enjoying
their retirement lifestyle in Wallis. They have been residents of Wallis
for 28 years, having been attracted here by the City’s relaxed small
town atmosphere. Mary currently serves on the City’s Planning and Zoning
Commission as well as the Wallis Fine Rides Autofest planning committee.
She is a past President of the Friends of the Library, and also served
on the Wallis Little League Board. Mary is a member of Grace Fellowship
Church. She has four children and two grandchildren. Her hobby is
reading.

Councilor Clark Main, Jr.

Clark Main, Jr. :
Clark was appointed to serve as a City Council representative on the
Board in June of 2005. He is employed as a Field Technician with
Hanover Co. Clark also serves his community through membership in
the Wallis Volunteer Fire Department. He is a member of United
Methodist Church, and has one child. His hobby is golf. |
